British soldiers will soon be wearing camouflage uniforms that will also provide power to the soldiers electrical devices, like radio and GPS.
During the day the Sun will provide most of the power, but when there is no sunlight, it will also use the body heat of the soldier to generate electricity. Because the uniform absorbs heat, it will have the added effect of lessening the infrared signature of the soldier. This could reduce the visibility by thermal IR night vision devices. The system is also useful since it reduces the need to carry around heavy batteries.

ReplyDeleteThis is one of those things that makes me go "why the fuck didn't they do this before?" But I guess it's hard to actually implement such an idea, even though it sounds simple and kinda obvious.
