The goal of Project Mercury was to send a man into orbit and return him safely back down on the ground. While Yuri Gagarin was first to succeed in this task, John Glenn quickly followed him. There's a great book and a movie titled "The Right Stuff" that talks about the trials of Project Mercury. I highly recommend it.
Project Gemini followed Mercury and had the aim of figuring out orbital maneuvers required to accomplish the more difficult task of going to the moon, such as space walks and docking between two spacecraft.
