Rare early NASA photos

These are scanned photos from the NASA Projects Mercury and Gemini made available thanks to the efforts of NASA, L. B. J. Space Center and Arizona State University. There are thousands more, all available in high quality here http://tothemoon.ser.asu.edu/

The goal of Project Mercury was to send a man into orbit and return him safely back down on the ground. While Yuri Gagarin was first to succeed in this task, John Glenn quickly followed him. There's a great book and a movie titled "The Right Stuff" that talks about the trials of Project Mercury. I highly recommend it.

Project Gemini followed Mercury and had the aim of figuring out orbital maneuvers required to accomplish the more difficult task of going to the moon, such as space walks and docking between two spacecraft.

  3. Wow great picks, really like the first one. Such a tiny planet we leave on when looking at it from up there.

  4. I liked astronomy a bit, but astrophysics is cooler, isn't it?

  5. I really like the washed out look of the colors on these old photographs. They look like stills from 2001: A Space Odyssey or something.
